Despite the increasing spread of a variety of gadgets, including in addition to numerous functions and watches, the accessory does not lose its popularity. They continue to act as a status element of the image of a person, and are widely used by large businessmen, politicians, and famous people.
Fashion History
The first wristwatches were made for Elizabeth I. A bracelet made of precious material and inlaid with no less expensive stones turned them into a feminine jewelry and for a long time they played in that role.
Men's options were produced in a pocket form, but also had an element of luxury, namely a gold chain for fastening. Only in the period from 1914 to 1918 did they move out of pocket to men's hands. This is due to the fact that the First World War was on, and the wrist version was much more convenient than the previous one.
Over time, like other equipment, the watches improved and models suitable for certain categories of people appeared (pilots, athletes, divers, etc.).
Theories of why the watch is worn on the left hand
This question touches many areas, from the historical point of view to the mystical one. Each of the areas gives more or less believable facts.
History suggests that wearing it on the left hand is associated with the design features of the accessory. Manufacturers of products, developing design, are guided by the fact that the vast majority of people are right-handed.In this regard, the wheel for the plant of mechanical options is located on the right side (for the convenience of the plant).
The second version suggests that for quite a long time, watches were the prerogative of wealthy people who occupy a high position in society and devote a lot of time to various written matters. So, the additional decoration on the right side could interfere. Mass wearing was adopted as an imitation.
There is another theory that argues that since the 1940s of the 20th century, the issue of unemployment has become acute, especially in Europe, which in turn has led to the spread of theft. And those who were directly involved in it, put a watch on their right hand, as a signal, in order to avoid being robbed by their “colleagues”. Decent citizens were worn on the left so as not to be confused with thieves.
Considering this issue from a practical point of view, it is logical to turn to information from manufacturing companies. They suggest that wearing it on the left hand is due to the fact that the right-handed people, who are the majority, make fewer movements with their left side. So, putting the watch on this side, the mechanism is less damaged and the product lasts longer.
Interesting fact: Based on this statement, large and even small firms offer most of the models adapted specifically for the left hand. Some companies also produce options for left-handed people, the main difference is the location of the crown on the left side.
Medical and psychological aspects
According to official medicine, even slight pressure on the wrist, naturally caused by any strap, leads to a decrease in blood flow. This in turn has a negative impact on the functionality and performance of the hand. They recommend that you do not put the accessory on your leading hand.
Interesting fact: the ancient Chinese teaching "Fukuri" claims that on the left wrist of a strong half of humanity there is a point responsible for normalizing the heart rhythm called "Cun", while for women it is on the opposite side, which means it is preferable to wear a watch on the right.
The version put forward by psychologists is very different from all of the above. In their opinion, the choice of one or the other side is directly related to how a person perceives the passage of time. Namely:
- the right hand is preferred by those who boldly look to the future and firmly go to their goal, not being afraid of the expectation ahead;
- Wearing a clock on the left, a person signals that he is dependent on the past and is afraid of the future.
Regardless of all of the above, a person chooses on which hand he should wear a watch.
